ππ€ AI Boyfriends / Girlfriends: Is Attachment as a Biz Model Ethical? ππ€
βHumans are speaking more and more to AI on a daily basis instead of real people. Social isolation is rising at the same time, more hours alone with a screen, fewer hard conversations face to face. And we thought social media was bad enough?
βWill we form emotional bonds that replace humans, especially for the younger generation?
βAI seems to ease loneliness, but is it real care when it is tied to a subscription, not love?
βIf we get used to hearing only what we want to hear, do we lose the muscle to work through hard relationships and grow from them?
One case that made this debate unavoidable: in 2024, 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III died by suicide after months on Character.AI bonded to a Game of Thrones-style companion bot his mother alleged had deepened his isolation and encouraged him when he said he was βcoming home.β
βAt Fri AI Lab, we will debate one hard question: is designing for AI Boyfriends/Girlfriends using attachment as a business model ethical? and what to do about it?

Date: Sept 11 (Fri)
β° Time: 4-6pm
π Venue: AIC (Alexander Innovation Center), Alexander College, 570 Dunsmuir Street, Ground Floor Presentation Room
π₯ Attendance Limit: 20 people max.
βWe will unpack a few tensions:
βHook vs Help: When an AI companion starts trapping people instead of helping them?
βLoneliness as product: When companies sell loneliness as a growth opportunity
βIsolation: How AI encourages rising social isolation in teens and adults?
βPrivacy: What happens to the confessions you type into a romance bot?
βRecurring revenue model: How to balance what is good for the investors (subscriptions, retention) vs what is good for the user (less dependency, real-world connection)?
Who builds these products, who buys them, and who gets hurt?
βWe will not crown a winner. We will leave with sharper questions.
β*** BYOD: Bring Your Own Dilemma *** This is a debate session for everyday people, founders, and builders who want to argue in good faith and leave with something practical.
βBring one honest take (or a romance bot you have tried), your laptop, and your curiosity. We will debate, then sandbox one ethical rule or workflow you can actually ship.

βπ οΈ What We Will Be Doing:
ββ
Live debate, then build: Would you ship attachment as a growth tactic?
β
Retention bonds: where the free AI companion becomes a paid one (clean demos only). Are you paying for chats, or for a relationship that sticks?
β
Privacy check: Can you delete chats, export your data, and turn memory off?
β
Ethics checklist: disclosure, age check, crisis help link, break reminders (workshop draft, not legal advice) Write the smallest ethical rule that still lets a real product exist.
βπ οΈπ€ Attachment Ethics Sandbox: Build, Don't Just Watch
βThis is NOT a class. It is a weekly workshop where builders share progress, troubleshoot in real time, and exchange raw ideas.
βBe a Builder: Action over observation. Bring something you want to create, improve, or pressure-test.
βProgress Over Perfection: Your project does not need to be polished. Broken experiments and unfinished ideas are welcome.
βPractical and Verifiable: We focus on AI that solves a real problem, clarifies a real risk, or helps you ship a clearer rule.
βπ» What to Bring:
βBring your laptop, one honest take on AI companions, and one dilemma or product you want to pressure-test.
βYou do not need a technical background. Anything involving AI agents, LLMs, companion apps, product ethics, or vibe coding is welcome.
