About Event

From Tuesday on, walk into Printed Matter in Chelsea, put on a pair of headphones, and listen to the soundscape that built AI Week.

GULFF — the transatlantic duo of Brooklyn-based artist and editor Tod Lippy (founder of Esopus) and Manchester-based electronic musician Owain Kelly (NO CEREMONY///) — present the Data Center Listening Party, a single-channel video installation assembled from clips that residents of communities near AI data centers have recorded themselves. Soundscapes from AI datacenter communities are interspersed with a first-listen stream of GULFF’s newly released single “The Rumo(u)r.”

“The Rumo(u)r” is the second from the duo's forthcoming self-titled debut album, a record built on found audio: robocall voicemails, QVC footage, hold music, the 2600Hz tone once used in phone phreaking, and the data center hum at the center of this installation.

The installation runs from Thursday, May 14, through Sunday, May 17, sited at a dedicated station inside Printed Matter's bookstore. Visitors engage individually, on headphones amidst the bookshelves. Free and open to the public during store hours.
