Third Cinema Screening Programme:

Presented by The People’s Cinema & Theatre Club
Join us for a three-part screening programme exploring Third Cinema, a radical film tradition that emerged in the 20th century as a response to Hollywood and its dominant ways of seeing the world.

Our Host:

Third Cinema is a film movement that grew through anti-colonial and revolutionary struggles across the Global South. Born out of struggles for liberation in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Arab world, Third Cinema asks what film can do beyond consumption.

Programme:

This programme brings together three films that reflect the spirit of Third Cinema across different contexts, each engaging questions of imperialism, injustice, dignity and collective resistance. After each screening we will be leading a group discussion about the films and Senegalese cinema.

Palestine, Another Vietnam
A militant documentary that draws a connection between the Palestinian struggle and wider anti-imperialist movements, showing how cinema can act as a tool of international solidarity.

The Mandate
Ousmane Sembène’s sharp and humane portrait of post-independence Senegal, revealing how bureaucracy, class and power continue to shape everyday life after colonial rule.

Blood of the Condor
Jorge Sanjinés’ landmark film on foreign intervention and Indigenous resistance in Bolivia, exposing the violence of imperialism and the political force of collective awakening.

Together, these films remind us that the struggles of oppressed people are not separate. They are linked by shared structures of domination and by shared desires for freedom, dignity and self-determination.
