No previous experience required, designed for beginners and open to anyone curious about this beautiful traditional art.
All tools and materials will be provided. A take-home ceramic piece included.
A Quiet Practice of Repair, Reflection, and Renewal
Learn the art of repairing broken ceramics with professional Kintsugi artist makomako.kintsugi in this Palo Alto workshop at SHANTI DHARA WELLNESS.
In this 2.5-hour hands-on workshop, you will be guided through the materials, philosophy, and process behind traditional urushi kintsugi, finish repairing one small ceramic piece using authentic materials and natural urushi lacquer.
This 2.5 hour session also Includes an introduction to the bonding stage of repair, either on a prepared sample or on a small broken ceramic (glazed) piece of your own.
*Note: *Traditional Kintsugi is a multi-stage process, the bonded piece cannot be completed with gold in one session.
What to Expect
An introduction to the history and philosophy of kintsugi
Hands-on experience with traditional materials and natural urushi lacquer
Final metallic finishing on one prepared ceramic piece, which you can take home with
Experience bonding broken pieces, either on a prepared sample or on a piece of your own
A quiet, small-group environment
Important Safety Note:
This workshop uses urushi lacquer, the natural sap of the lacquer tree. In its uncured state, urushi contains urushiol, the same allergen as poison ivy, and may cause skin irritation in some individuals.
Gloves will be provided, safety instructions will be given.
If you accidentally have skin contact with urushi, you agree to immediately massage the affected area with plant-based oil, and wash your hands with soap and water.
This workshop is not recommended for individuals with severe urushiol allergies.

Optional: Own broken piece (glossy glazed, palm-sized, ceramic, limited up to 5 fragments) to mend (**Note: only the first bonding step can be completed during this session.)
