About Event

Steel produces roughly 7–9% of global CO₂ emissions, but it gets far less public attention than energy or transport. Steelmakers and governments still set the terms of the conversation, mostly through long-term promises like “green steel” and carbon neutrality roadmaps. Meanwhile, investment decisions that will shape emissions for decades are being made now, and many of them pass without public or media scrutiny. Green steel won’t become a reality on corporate promises alone. It needs public demand, political pressure, and a civil society that can show how the issue connects to people’s lives.

The roundtable will be an open discussion among civil society organizations from different countries. As host, SFOC will open with a short presentation on steel decarbonization, drawing on our experience bringing steel into public debate in Korea, including the long-overlooked issue of blast furnaces. The discussion will center on two questions: why steel has to be part of the decarbonization conversation, and how we get people to care about it. You don’t need to prepare a presentation. The moderator will pose a few broad questions, and participants will take turns sharing their country’s experiences, insights, and views.
