Description
This gathering is timed alongside the Reinforcement Learning Conference (RLC 2026), taking place August 15–18 in Montréal — a highly focused global venue for the reinforcement learning community. While RLC is centered on reinforcement learning, the field is increasingly intersecting with AI for Science, scientific discovery, robotics, world models, and other frontier AI applications. This gathering builds on those intersections, bringing together researchers, builders, investors, and ecosystem leaders to explore how advances in RL and related fields can translate into new scientific capabilities, ventures, and global innovation.
Canada has played an important role in the development of reinforcement learning and frontier AI, from the research lineage associated with Rich Sutton and Amii in Edmonton to leading research communities across Toronto, Montréal, and beyond. But the opportunity today extends well beyond any single geography. As frontier AI increasingly connects research, scientific discovery, entrepreneurship, and capital across borders, a broader question emerges: how do exceptional ideas and talent move from the lab into the world — and how can research and innovation communities connect more effectively across Canada, Silicon Valley, and the broader global AI ecosystem?
This session is not designed as a conventional panel. It is a small, informal conversation among people actively living that transition — researchers, founders, builders, investors, and ecosystem leaders connected through RLC, Stanford Ignite, Canadian AI communities, Silicon Valley, and other global networks. The goal is to exchange perspectives, surface promising connections, and explore how frontier research — particularly at the intersection of RL and AI for Science — can move across disciplines, institutions, and borders.

Rico Meinl — Head of AI at Retro Biosciences, working at the intersection of AI, cell reprogramming, and programmable medicine. His work includes collaboration with OpenAI, applying GPT-4b micro to explore redesigned Yamanaka factors for cell reprogramming.
