BE WATER: Sailing with Barbara Veiga

A FoodiesLX Experience

Some journeys are about the destination. This one is about the depth.

Join us for an intimate evening sailing aboard a sailboat, as we set sail from Doca de Belém into golden hourguided by the voice and stories of Barbara Veiga, Brazilian multimedia artist, storyteller, and ocean advocate.

A former TV Globo journalist, Barbara's love for the sea began on a Greenpeace mission to protect the Amazon rainforest. That path led her to spend seven years living aboard a sailboat, navigating more than 85 countries and collaborating with organizations like Greenpeace, Sea Shepherd, and Avaaz along the way. She co-founded the Women's League for the Ocean (Liga das Mulheres pelo Oceano), authored the book Seven Years in Seven Seas, and has taken the stage at TEDxLisboa to share her story. Today, her exhibitions, performances, and talks use art and storytelling as tools for environmental awareness — turning conservation into something felt, not just understood.

As the city fades behind us and the river opens up, Barbara will share tales from her life at sea — encounters with whales, pirates, and paradise — and lead a conversation about our relationship to nature, and what it truly means to protect it. There will be good drinks in hand, snacks worth savoring, and conversation that drifts wherever it wants to.

This isn't a boat tour. It's an evening with someone who has lived a hundred lifetimes at sea — close enough to hear her stories firsthand, and to sit close, listen, and feel the sea the way she does.

MEET THE HOSTS

Barbara Veiga

Barbara Veiga is a Brazilian multimedia artist, photographer, filmmaker, and storyteller whose work weaves together art, nature, and human connection. Through photography, film, performance, music, and immersive experiences, she invites audiences to reconnect with the natural world and see environmental conservation through an emotional, creative lens.

Her relationship with the ocean began over two decades ago, during a Greenpeace mission to protect the Amazon rainforest. That journey led her to spend seven years living aboard a sailboat, navigating more than 85 countries while collaborating with organizations like Sea Shepherd and Avaaz, and co-founding the Women's League for the Ocean (Liga das Mulheres pelo Oceano). Along the way, she documented extraordinary people, places, and ecosystems, turning her experiences into visual narratives that inspire action.

A former TV Globo journalist and author of Seven Years in Seven Seas, Barbara now works across fine art photography, documentary film, exhibitions, live performance, and public speaking — always blending emotion, science, and story. Based in Portugal, she continues to create work that celebrates curiosity, beauty, and hope, and shows how art can be a powerful tool for environmental awareness and collective transformation.
