Future Playbook: Inside China’s Short Drama Ecosystem
This is a small, informal coffee chat inspired by my book Future Playbook: China’s Short Drama Ecosystem and Insights for Global Business.
The session includes a 45-minute structured sharing, followed by 30 minutes of open discussion and Q&A.
Rather than focusing on tactics, this session traces the origins and evolution of China’s short drama ecosystem — how it formed, how it scaled, and how its underlying logic continues to evolve.

Today, more than 660 million people in China actively watch short dramas — nearly half of the country’s population, and more than twice the population of the United States. Behind this scale is not a single content trend, but a rapidly evolving system.
During the session, I’ll share insights into:
How China’s short drama ecosystem first emerged
Key stages of its evolution — from production cost structures and team organization to content formats and creative pipelines
How monetization models shifted over time, from IAP (in-app purchase) to IAA (in-app advertising)
How short drama storytelling logic has spilled over into adjacent formats, including AI-powered dynamic animation, branded short dramas, interactive storytelling, cultural tourism dramas, and other hybrid products
These newer formats reflect how short drama narrative structures are being adopted across industries, giving rise to entirely new products rather than simple content variations.
This is an off-the-record, conversational session designed for thoughtful exchange rather than a formal presentation.
