Event Hosts
Kantara is a fair trade design business specializing in handwoven rugs and textiles from women’s weaving cooperatives in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. Kantara, meaning "bridge" in Arabic, is deeply committed to fostering the economic development of its artisans through ethical trade, creating a direct conversation between the artisans and you. Since 2008, we have worked directly with the same cooperatives, inspired by the tenacity of these highly skilled women weavers, their creativity, and their commitment to a craft that goes back generations and generations. Thanks to our longstanding relationship, we are able to curate and design rugs that preserve ancient weaving traditions while adding a modern touch. Follow our journey here: moroccanrugs
Climate Designers is a global design community hub for creative professionals from all industries, committed to supporting designers to be climate leaders everywhere they work. Climate Designers empowers designers to learn, connect, and act on climate solutions to actively co-create a just and regenerative world. The LA Chapter is co-led by multimedia artist & filmmaker Margaret To and interdisciplinary creative director Rachel Cellinese. Schessa Garbutt is a Belizean-American designer & textile artist from Los Angeles. Their studio practice at Firebrand Creative House focuses on the intersections between the ecological and spiritual, the personal and political, the near future and ancient past. The Earth is one superorganism and humans are just one of its many organelles. Even as natural disasters and climate despair grow in tandem, modern life makes it easy to ignore this reality. “My work is to help everyday people stay present with our changing environments so that we might better prepare for our collective future.” This re-memory work has taken many forms, including near-futurist writing, biological illustration, printmaking, and public arts workshops. They hold a B.A. in Design from University of Southern California.
Currently, Garbutt is creating ‘Eco-Spirituals’, a series of large-scale cyanotype quilts and ritual objects for ecosystems and the humans that steward their eco-histories.
Garbutt has exhibited at the Ford Foundation Gallery (New York); Project Space and Crenshaw Dairy Mart (Inglewood, CA); the California African American Museum, A+D Museum, and Giant Robot (Los Angeles, CA). They have given design & altar-building lectures internationally at DiaTipo São Paulo and Mariam Ibrahim Gallery (Ciudad de México). Clients and collaborators include California State Parks, Arlington Garden, OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon, and State of CA Governor's Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation (LCI). LA Design Weekend is a week/end-long celebration of LA’s sprawling, spectacular design scene—broken down into bite-sized, neighborhood-based experiences. It’s a progression, moving from one part of the city to the next across four days. The event brings together studios, shops, installations, and more in clustered pockets, making it easy to explore by foot, bike, scooter, Metro, or whatever wheels you’ve got. Whether you're local or just design-curious, it’s your chance to see LA through a fresh, creative lens—one stop at a time.
