About the Conversation

How does user experience play into the design of intentional environments in the real world? Léonard Roussel's entry into experience design began with sound; he currently leads the technical delivery of multisensory experiential projects at design and engineering firm Arup in New York.

He shares his take on the Arup philosophy of Total Design and how it feeds into deploying meaningful experiences in physical space, particularly in the context of large-scale public space projects impacting many user types and requiring careful coordination of multiple design disciplines for successful implementation.

He illustrates this framework with two current projects: the newly announced Cultural Program (Art, Branding, and Digital Experience) at the New Terminal One at JFK Airport, and the Riverwalks Resilience and Revitalization in Downtown Providence, RI, both experience-led with their own unique set of challenges, as well as his own art practice that focuses on our complex relationships with an unexpected type of users in the built environment.
