Lakehouse, Lagers & Legends [Houston]: Real-World AI Agents with Databricks: What They Can (and Can't) Do
About the Session
AI agents are becoming central to modern data platforms, but building them reliably requires more than just models. Teams need governance, access controls, and operational clarity to ensure agents perform as intended in production.
In this session, David Morton (Solutions Architect, Databricks) will provide an in-depth, practical view of AI agents on Databricks. You’ll learn how they work, what governance is required, and how to deploy them safely at scale.
Why Join
Connect with some of the city’s sharpest minds in data engineering and AI.
Walk away with actionable insights on building AI agents safely and effectively in Databricks.
Share a drink, swap ideas, and maybe even find a collaborator for your next project.
What to Expect
Participants will gain hands-on insight into:
Agent Fundamentals: How AI agents interact with data, compute, and pipelines in Databricks
Policy & Access Control: Attribute-based access control (ABAC) strategies and how they prevent unintended access
Operational Governance: Techniques to monitor agent actions, ensure auditability, and enforce compliance
Production experience: Common pitfalls in production, including handling failures, edge cases, and dependency management
Interactive Q&A: Bring your current implementation questions and get expert guidance from David.
Connections with other engineers and architects: A chance to share experiences
By the end, you’ll leave with actionable ideas for running agents safely and effectively in your Databricks environment.

Featured Speaker
David Morton is a seasoned Solution Architect at Databricks, where he works closely with customers and the data community to help organizations leverage the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform. He’s spent years designing real-world data solutions and sharing what actually works when systems grow and complexity kicks in.
He lives in Houston with his wife, two boys, a dog, and a cat. When he’s not working with data, you’ll find him camping in the outdoors or quietly knitting away at his latest crochet project, a perfect balance of adventure and calm that reflects his approach to life.
About Lakehouse, Lagers & Legends
What started as a few meetups for data engineers has turned into a worldwide community of people who live and breathe data. Each event blends two things our crowd cares about most: sharp, practical sessions on the latest in data engineering and a relaxed setting to trade ideas over a cold drink.
Every stop is a little different- new city, new voices, fresh conversations but the core stays the same: bring smart people together, share real-world lessons, and spark collaborations that carry on long after the night ends.
