Artificial Life: AI's Next Frontier
What's next for AI?
Rumors of another cycle of AI winter are upon us, which calls for a shift in our approach to understanding intelligence. What could be a new way of navigating, or preparing for the next cycle? How might we mitigate an impending decline in funding, interest, and excitement for AI?
Scientists are recognizing that a small, but rapidly growing field called Artificial Life (Alife) offers several promising pathways to the current limitations of AI development. LLMs are currently based on language that runs out of data, and concepts within Alife could be an expansive approach to preparing for the AI winter and beyond.
Join us on Friday, Sept. 12th, 2025 for a thought-provoking and in-depth discussion on how Alife could revolutionize our understanding of AI and its growing deep roots in Japan.

The Deck
The Deck is an open and vibrant co-working space at the heart of Osaka that provides a cozy physical space, a global community, holds events and provides support to startups, individuals and organizations based in Japan and different parts of the world to help bring their visions come to life.
Supported by:
Cross Labs
Cross Labs is a unique scientific research lab in Kyoto that studies the fundamental principles of intelligence. It aims to design new tools to solve problems in the industry, thus bridging the gap between industrial and academic research, by promoting fundamental and applied science in connection with the technological needs of future society.
Cross Compass
Cross Compass develops cutting-edge technologies in deep learning, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. As a developer of artificial intelligence technology, it has been one of the first to apply it to the manufacturing industry. It mainly provides cutting-edge solutions to global companies in the fields of industrial robots, games, medicine, healthcare, and marketing. It contributes to improving safety, quality, and productivity so that cutting-edge technology can benefit human society.
In support of:
ALIFE 2025
The annual Artificial Life Conference is the world's premiere Artificial Life conference. This year’s theme is Ciphers of Life, encouraging participants to explore the many ways that life encodes information, creates internal languages, and interacts in encrypted ways with its environment.
