Branching Beyond the EUDR: Lessons and Pathways for Global Deforestation-Free Supply Chains
The Second Global Stocktake (GST2) offers an opportunity to strengthen implementation across the climate agenda, and trade is a critical link between climate targets and real-world outcomes. By shaping how commodities, materials, capital and technologies move through global supply chains, trade determines whether the transition advances decarbonisation while protecting forests and the communities that depend on them. Yet supply chain sustainability efforts still have significant gaps, and unilateral measures risk market leakage, where commodities linked to deforestation are redirected to markets with weaker safeguards. These risks are shared and systemic, and no single country or company can address them alone, pointing to the need for a more cooperative supply chain agenda.
This session will bring together policymakers, researchers and civil society organisations from producer and consumer countries to share experience on forest-risk commodity supply chains, highlighting governance and research gaps. Drawing on lessons from the development and implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), it will examine how stronger due diligence, deforestation-free trade measures and international cooperation can be advanced and scaled globally to reinforce climate action, forest protection and nature-positive development.
