Join us on 12 September for a private tour at Upstream Gallery, bringing together exhibitions by Jan Robert Leegte, Rafaël Rozendaal and Néstor Siré.
Through very different practices, the artists explore how technology shapes the way we see, create and experience the world. From JPEG compression and generative imagery to painting, gaming and open source technology, the exhibitions offer different perspectives on contemporary digital culture.

About the Exhibitions 🖼️
Jan Robert Leegte, Sightings
In Sightings, Jan Robert Leegte explores JPEG compression, an invisible technology that has shaped the image based internet since the early 1990s.
Using a generative system, he creates images that appear photographic without ever having been photographs. Evoking satellite imagery, deep space photography and distant sightings, the works question what we see and how images are constructed.
The exhibition also includes Orbits, a multiscreen installation where spheres orbit one another in a 3D scene that is generated and compressed in real time. Together, the works bring image, code and reality into conversation.
Rafaël Rozendaal, Books
In Books, Rafaël Rozendaal presents diptychs of monochrome paintings in muted pastel tones, framed like open books.
Moving between abstraction and recognition, the works reduce landscapes and objects to simple lines and colours. Continuing his interest in reduction and the blank page, Rozendaal creates a quieter space within an increasingly saturated visual culture.
As he puts it, “In an attention economy, focus is the ultimate luxury.”
Néstor Siré
Néstor Siré, a Cuban multimedia artist and current artist in residence at the Rijksakademie, explores how people adapt and reinvent technology.
His research focuses on gamers who modify hardware, questioning who defines what counts as legitimate technology. Through collaborative and open source practices, Siré highlights informal forms of innovation and the ways technology becomes a space of individual and collective negotiation.
Three Perspectives on Digital Culture ✨
What makes these exhibitions interesting together is how differently they approach technology.
Leegte looks at how images are generated and perceived. Rozendaal explores reduction, attention and the possibility of leaving space open. Siré looks at how people appropriate and reinvent technology.
Together, they offer a broader reflection on how we see, how we pay attention and how we make technology our own.

There’s something compelling about encountering these three practices together. They approach digital culture from different directions, yet each reveals something about the systems shaping how we see and experience the world.
Rather than treating technology as something distant or purely technical, the exhibitions bring it back to perception, attention and human experience.
