About Event

Join us for a hands-on workshop exploring creative approaches to sustainable textile design led by artist and designer Mira Musank. Participants will learn how simple paper materials can become the starting point for garment and textile construction while engaging with ideas of waste reduction, craft, and sustainable making. No prior experience is required.

This is a free event, but space is limited, and advance registration is recommended.

This workshop is part of the San José Climate Art Program, an initiative connecting artists, cultural organizations, and communities through creative responses to climate action. Paper to Pattern is organized in collaboration with Mira Musank, FabMo, and the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles.

Mira Musank (she/her) is an interdisciplinary textile upcycling artist who transforms discarded textiles and second-hand clothes into custom garments. She focuses on the intersection of slow fashion practices, sustainability solutions, and climate activism in her learning journey. Circularity as a counter-act of overconsumption and waste is central in both her artistic expression and her community engagement.

To date, her brand Fafafoom Studio has recirculated 300+ pounds of textiles back into local communities. She has showcased her works in Climate Week events in SF, LA, and NYC. Her signature “Gathered Cloths” project, made out of 100% sewing remnants, has started to gain recognition across the Bay Area and on the global stage. Fafafoom Studio aims to inspire people to rethink their relationship with textiles and embrace a 'waste not, wear more' mindset while also raising awareness of the global threat of textile waste. https://www.fafafoom.com

FabMo is a California-based non-profit organization dedicated to creative reuse and environmental stewardship. It rescues over 70 tons of discontinued designer materials annually—including high-end fabrics, wallpaper, tile, leather, and carpet—diverting them from landfills. https://www.fabmo.org/

The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, founded in 1977, was the first museum in the United States dedicated solely to quilts and textiles as an art form. Located in the SoFA (South First Area) Arts District of downtown San Jose, it serves as a premier venue for both historical and cutting-edge fiber art. The mission of the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles is to preserve, celebrate, and promote knowledge about quilts and textiles, their creation, their beauty, and their relationship to human culture and expression. https://sj-mqt.org/
