field:work | Break(ing)Beats with Strudel
What happens when we approach code as a way of arranging, repeating, breaking, and transforming sound?
In this 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱:𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 workshop, Kapilan Naidu introduces Strudel, a browser-based environment for making music through live coding. Starting with sampling and simple patterns, we’ll explore how repetition, omission, rearrangement, speed, layering, and variation can become tools for making music with code.
We’ll begin by chopping and transforming supplied drum breaks before turning to sounds of your own—voice notes, field recordings, objects, instruments, or anything else you might have recorded. Along the way, we’ll also look at the histories of sampling and breakbeat culture, and consider what working directly with musical processes might offer at a moment increasingly shaped by AI-generated music.
Bring a laptop and a few short audio recordings to experiment with. No coding or music-making experience required. Please don’t bring finished songs or existing music to remix—we’re interested in transforming non-musical and everyday sounds into rhythmic and musical material. No coding or music-making experience required.
Workshops & Explorations is a monthly series within 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱:𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 exploring creative coding, generative systems, and computation as an artistic medium.
