The Storm Events Database – A Conversation with Kwin Keuter and Brad Andrick
Join us for a conversation with Kwin Keuter and Brad Andrick from Earth Genome to explore the recently launched Storm Events Database – a collaborative effort by Earth Genome, The Commons, and the Internet of Water Coalition to make over 1.9 million U.S. severe weather events accessible.
We’ll dig into two threads:
From raw records to usable insights: How Earth Genome and partners transformed 70+ years of complex NCEI storm data – covering tornadoes, floods, hail, hurricanes, and other high-impact events – into a user-friendly, exploration-ready dataset that supports emergency management, research, urban planning, and insurance risk assessment.
Designing for accessibility and impact: What it took to build the platform that ordinary citizens, analysts, and decision-makers can actually use.
We’ll also talk about the broader opportunity: how opening federal data through collaborative tooling can unlock more insights.
