​Generative AI is increasingly being used to garner information, summarize research, and support decisions about climate strategies and net-zero action.

​But what happens when these systems produce outputs that sound credible while remaining generic, weakly evidenced, or poorly aligned with real-life conditions?

​In this talk, Dr. Angel Hsu will introduce the concept of “greenslop” as well as the problems of hallucination, bias, and other failures in AI, especially in the climate domain. Dr. Hsu will also discuss ChatNetZero, an AI application that she co-developed which helps check, compare, and understand the climate and net-zero goals set by countries and companies. Lastly, she will share research insights on how AI can be used more safely and reliably for business sustainability, such as through the adoption of “right-sized” models.

​Speakers

​Dr. Angel Hsu is an Associate Professor of Public Policy and the Environment, Ecology and Energy Program (E3P) at UNC-Chapel Hill. She is also Founder and Director of the Data-Driven EnviroLab, an interdisciplinary research group that innovates and applies quantitative approaches to pressing environmental issues. Angel’s research explores the intersection of science and policy and the use of data-driven approaches to understand environmental sustainability, particularly in the areas of climate change and energy, urbanization and air quality. Her research projects apply large-scale datasets derived from satellite remote sensing and other spatially-explicit sources to evaluate environmental policy performance.

​Damon Lim is a research associate in the Data Driven EnviroLab at UNC-Chapel Hill where he contributes to research projects related to AI and climate action. He studied anthropology and environmental studies at Yale-NUS College, Singapore. He previously worked for the Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore and a conservation park in Penang, Malaysia. He has also conducted research on green buildings and financing for the National University of Singapore (NUS), worked as a teacher in Spain, and organized international education conferences.
