About Event

As artificial intelligence advances toward transformative capabilities, understanding its economic effects is central to shaping policies that are fair, forward-looking and productivity enhancing. In this workshop, Peter Bowers will share some key ideas from Stanford’s Economics of Transformative AI summer school and invite participants to reflect on how these insights connect to public policy in Australia.

The session will open a conversation about how economic thinking can help society prepare for deep shifts in labour markets and income distribution. Participants from across sectors are encouraged to bring their perspectives on what economics research questions will be most useful to policymakers.

Peter Bowers is the Acting Director of the Health Impact Evaluation Unit in the Australian Centre for Evaluation at Treasury. He has a strong interest in the economics of AI; particularly how it affects growth, employment and inequality, and how policy should respond. He is currently exploring potentially doing significant research in this area and welcomes feedback and discussion from CoLab participants on his emerging research directions.

AI CoLab events are intentionally open and collaborative. For this session we may capture photos to share publicly. This is done in line with the Charter’s values; transparent, ethical innovation and knowledge sharing to accelerate collective learning (see join.aicolab.org). By participating in this event, you agree to being photographed and for those images to be shared in accordance with this policy.
