​A Room Within is a Butoh/Viola performance by Heri Shin. Combining the Japanese movement art of Butoh with the Western classical instrument, the viola, a unique artistic language emerges in which movement, sound, and emotion exist as a whole.

​Created specifically in response to the gallery’s enclosed, underground atmosphere, the performance transforms the space into an intimate world of its own. The audience, seated along both sides of the space, becomes part of its boundaries, while the performer inhabits the space as if she has always belonged there.

​Through movement, sound, and emotion, Shin explores the experience of living within what is familiar. What happens when a space becomes so familiar that we no longer question its boundaries? Can something that confines us also become a place of comfort, belonging?

​A Room Within is an unfolding journey into the unknown, where nothing is predetermined and the work discovers its own way throughout the performance.

​About the Artist

​Heri Shin is a classically trained violist and Butoh practitioner whose work explores the space between music, movement, and improvisation. Trained at the Curtis Institute of Music, she has performed with internationally renowned ensembles including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Deutsche Oper Berlin, and Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. Through Butoh and improvisation, she expands the viola beyond the conventional concert format, creating performances where sound, movement, and narrative become one.
