LIVE MUSIC: Folk Songs for the AI Age with Jamie Simon and Eric Michaud
In decades past, folk songs have helped make sense of the times: to tell stories, poke at power, mourn what’s being lost, and imagine what might come next.
Woody Guthrie sang about inequality and labor. Pete Seeger sang about war and civil rights. Bob Dylan sang about a world that seemed to be changing underneath everyone’s feet.
So what does folk music sound like in the age of AI?
Come find out with researchers and musicians Jamie Simon and Eric Michaud—who, when they trade their laptops for guitars, are Rage Against the Turing Machine. Join for a night of original folk songs about AI, San Francisco, and tech culture.
Schedule:
6:00pm - Doors Open
7:00pm - Welcome + Music Begins
8:00pm - Closing conversation on AI, SF, & tech culture

Jamie Simon runs the Feature Lab at UC Berkeley, where he studies the fundamental science of deep learning, and is a Research Fellow at Imbue. He recently completed his PhD in physics at Berkeley and is one of the authors of There Will Be a Scientific Theory of Deep Learning. When he’s not thinking about deep learning, Jamie plays music, makes art and puzzles, wanders around in nature, and occasionally writes songs about the strange world of AI. See: Technocapitalist AI-Powered Blues.
Eric Michaud is a Research Scientist at the Astera Institute / Simplex. He recently completed his PhD in physics at MIT, where his work focused on understanding how deep neural networks learn and organize their internal representations. His research has spanned neural scaling, grokking, and the structure of neural network representations. He is also one of the authors of There Will Be a Scientific Theory of Deep Learning.
