Asian culture lives everywhere in Los Angeles — in food , rituals, aesthetics, and everyday moments. But where do these influences come from?

The award-winning documentary KŪKAI follows the journey of the Japanese monk Kūkai, who traveled to Tang China over 1,200 years ago, bringing back Esoteric Buddhism and a vast body of knowledge — from philosophy and art to education and aesthetics — that would shape cultural traditions across Asia.

Filmed over five years across China and Japan, KŪKAI is a cinematic exploration of cultural connection, shared heritage, and the invisible threads that continue to shape who we are today.
