Knitting 101: Let's Make a Shoulder Scarf!
Turn “I’ve never done this before” into “I made this!” with a cozy scarf you can wear with pride.
This beginner-friendly, hands-on class introduces the fundamentals of knitting while guiding you through creating a trendy scarf with tapered ends. Designed for complete beginners, this session focuses on building confidence, understanding technique, and getting comfortable with the rhythm of knitting.
Hour 1 of Class:
We’ll kick things off with the long-tail cast on and the knit stitch, covering needle handling, yarn tension, and stitch recognition. By the end of this section, you’ll be actively knitting and watching your scarf (or hat, if preferred) come to life.
Hour 2 of Class:
Next, you’ll learn the purl stitch, basic decreases for shaping, how to join a new ball of yarn, and finishing techniques like binding off or simple seaming. Instruction will be offered in both Continental and English styles, so you can work in the method that feels most natural to you.
Your Instructor:
Nansa Brown – A language teacher by trade and a knitter by heart, Nansa has been knitting for over 28 years and loves creating cozy sweaters. She lives in Trumansburg, NY, and you can find her beautiful knit goods at Sundrees in Trumansburg.
