Conversations over the Map
In this workshop, we will collectively embroider a long textile banner with a print of a map of fiber-optic cable stretching from Southampton, to Winchester and to London. Sitting across the length of fabric, the participants sitting across its length will be asked to embroider connections, thoughts and phrases around the “Southampton” area of the map; the process of embroidery will serve as a span of time to talk about technology and public access to it.
With embroidery and sewing being one of the traditional arts of care, maintenance and repair, how can we use this space to talk about care in infrastructures and technologies around us? What things are not there for us, where they should be? What kind of things do we do ourselves next to failing infrastructures? Who does the maintenance and repair work? These discussions will feed into the textile banner.
Led by Sasha Anikina as part of a public infrastructure.
