Who Gets the Grid?
Germany's grid operators have received 720GW of battery storage connection requests. Only 78GW have actually secured one.
As of this April, getting a grid connection in Germany isn't first-come-first-served anymore, it's a scored application, with a €50,000 entry fee. Projects are now scored on site readiness, technical maturity, financial capability, and co-location benefits, with a €50,000 application fee and €1,500/MW deposit required.
The technology isn't the bottleneck anymore, the grid connection queue is. Startups building Germany's battery storage layer aren't competing on better chemistry; they're competing for capacity against data centers, electrolysers, and industrial electrification, in a system where new grid infrastructure takes a decade to build.
This Breakfast Club brings together the founders determining the kind of infrastructure Berlin's cities will actually run on next.
