Sustainability is... Unsustainable?
🎉🎉🎉 INAUGURAL EVENT!!! 🎉🎉🎉
'Sustainability is…' is the latest series from 'Tech is… Creating Conversations' - and this is the very first event - come celebrate with us! We are starting as we mean to go on, with a question a lot of people are quietly asking but not saying out loud - is any of this working?
Tom Blower is Chief Product and R&D Officer at Agreena, a FinTech, AgTech and ClimateTech platform. He has spent his career building technology products in industries where the stakes are real and the users have every reason to be sceptical.
This event will be at Few & Far, 15 Worship Street, London, EC2A 2DT. A massive thank you to Few & Far for providing the venue.
Doors open at 6:30 PM, we kick off at 7:00 PM, and wrap up by 8:30 PM. Drinks and snacks will be provided. Come ready for proper discussion, new connections, and ideas worth thinking about.
--- THE THEME - SUSTAINABILITY IS... UNSUSTAINABLE? ---
Billions have been invested. Frameworks built. Entire industries repositioned around sustainability credentials. And yet, when you look at the outcomes - how much behaviour has changed, how many emissions have fallen, how many business models have held - the picture is hard to defend.
This is not a question about whether sustainability matters. Sustainability obviously matters. This is a question about whether the way we have been approaching sustainability is working.
Companies have launched products people stopped using. VC-backed climate tech has risen and fallen with the hype cycle. ESG investment has faced political and regulatory headwinds few people anticipated. And through all of this, the fundamental challenge of getting people - and systems - to change their behaviour has remained largely unsolved.
The problem might not be the goals. The starting point might be wrong. Too much sustainability innovation begins with a technology and works backwards toward a use case. Too little starts with a real human problem, a viable business model, and a realistic theory of how behaviour changes at scale.
We will be exploring what sustainability initiatives need to create lasting change, why so many well-funded efforts have failed to move the needle, and whether the current model of sustainability innovation is structurally broken.
--- THE SPEAKER - TOM BLOWER ---
Tom is Chief Product and R&D Officer at Agreena, a FinTech, AgTech and ClimateTech platform helping farmers and corporations unlock the value of nature. At Agreena, Tom has led the development of Agatha, an AI advisory tool giving farmers data-driven guidance tailored to their land - built on satellite data, remote sensing, and a deep respect for what farmers already know.
Before Agreena, Tom was VP of Product at Kry and Livi, where he built digital and physical healthcare products used by millions of patients across Europe. Before that, he led product at Ada Health, the AI-powered symptom assessment app with over 10 million downloads and the number one healthcare app in 120 countries.
Tom started his career at Dyson, where he spent nearly a decade in R&D and product design, winning a Red Dot Award along the way.
He has built products in some of the most trust-resistant, sustainability-critical industries on the planet. He has a lot to say about what works and what doesn't.
-------- ABOUT 'TECH IS… CREATING CONVERSATIONS' --------
'Tech is… Creating Conversations' is a community built around one simple belief: the best tech events are the ones where you leave having said something, not just heard something. It started with 'Product is…' - the original meetup in the family. It grew because Paul Woodley kept going to tech events where a speaker talked at a room for 45 minutes, a few polite questions were asked, and everyone went home. He wanted something different. Something where the people in the room were the point, not the afterthought.
The format is the same across every series. One speaker frames the theme. Then the room takes over. Small groups. Structured discussion. Real disagreement welcome. You do not need to be an expert. You need a perspective and a willingness to hear someone else's.
'Sustainability is…' is the newest series under that umbrella, sitting alongside 'Product is…' and 'ConTech is…'. Where 'Product is…' looks at the world of digital product, and 'ConTech is…' digs into construction technology, 'Sustainability is…' takes on sustainability through a practical tech, product, and business lens. Not the narrow environmental framing. The full picture - behaviour, systems, economics, regulation, and what it actually takes to build something that lasts.
-------- WHY WE CHARGE FOR TICKETS --------
We do not aim to make a profit from this meetup. Our goal is to create healthy and interesting conversations, meet new people, and make new connections. Speakers and the organising team give up their time free of charge to ensure the events are enjoyable for all. A charge is required for attendance - this allows the organising team to cover overheads, plus food and drink for the evening. We are working towards lowering our costs as much as possible to keep ticket prices as low as possible.
