Asia’s Gas Expansion and the Path to a Renewable Future
Overview
Japan, Korea, and Taiwan are among the world’s top LNG importers, ranking 1st, 3rd, and 16th globally. LNG consumption in these economies is plateauing and is expected to decline over time due to carbon neutrality goals, as well as efforts to reduce price volatility and import dependence. Continued large-scale LNG investments carry the risk of creating stranded assets, whereas a transition to renewable energy can deliver economic benefits and enhance energy security.
This event will highlight the changing dynamics of gas demand in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, examine how overinvestment in LNG could undermine climate and economic objectives, and showcase renewable energy pathways as practical and advantageous alternatives.
