THE (first) AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
Welcome!
This event is going to be a bit different than our usual format. This is a tell-all event about the American Civil War (the first one!), with particular emphasis on Lincoln. I feel compelled to post this in light of recent events. There will be many materials on offer to consult.
By the way, I am an unapologetic unionist. William Tecumseh Sherman did nothing wrong! There are too many civil war buffs who are sympathizers with traitors.
This is more history than philosophy. Nevertheless, philosophy will bubble around the edges if you pay attention. If you want a "conventional" renegade event, you can just show up at about 7:30 (consult some of the material before hand) We might have a more conventional renegade follow up once my thoughts are more well collected.
Here is the timeline : 5:00 - 5:20 mingling 5:20 - 5:40 brief summary of the political and historical context the movie talks about 5:40 - 8:00, watch Lincoln (2012) by Spielberg 8:00 - 10:00 PM usual event schedule.
Some materials to consult : 1 : Ken Burns made an incredible miniseries which has aged extremely well. There is a litany of clips on YouTube as well.

2 : This book is good, but extremely dense. Not easy! https://archive.org/details/teamofrivalspoli0000good_f2e0/page/n973/mode/2up
3 : The Crash course video is actually, surprisingly, decent Watch on YouTube
4 : This video is also excellent. This is in my opinion, the best civil war YouTube channel. Watch on YouTube
5 : This extremely long lecture does an excellent job at linking the politics of Lincoln to the present day. Watch on YouTube
As a last note, I will be growing out my beard in anticipation of the event. I will also bring my Lincoln costume.
