​For the first edition of Further Study, we’ll read across science fiction, speculative fiction, and contemporary writing to think about language, machines, and the production of meaning.

​From Borges’ infinite libraries and branching paths to automatic writers, questions without end, and contemporary generative AI, Syntax & Semantics brings together texts that imagine different relationships between language, computation, authorship, and knowledge.

​Facilitated by Hong Shu-Ying, the session will move through an informal discussion of the selected readings, alongside material from her personal collection of art books that will help situate these ideas within visual art and artistic practice.

​You don’t have to read everything! Pick at least one text from the reading list here before coming, and bring your thoughts, questions, disagreements, or anything else it leaves you with.

​Further Study is 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱:𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤’s reading group, bringing together texts and other materials as starting points for critical conversations around art, technology, media, and the ideas that surround them.
