Are you ready to become an activist for the planet?

Grab your friends and family for a family-friendly movie night at the Activists for the Planet Short Film Showcase! We’ll screen three short films that highlight concrete pathways to the restoration, stewardship, and protection of our oceans, followed by a networking session. Afterwards, you can engage in different direct actions in support of the initiatives highlighted in each film, from writing letters to joining citizen science movements.

MISHOPSHNO follows the initiative to create one of California’s first tribally co-managed marine protected areas, a proposal that could redefine conservation itself. Off the coast of Carpinteria, fishermen, scientists, and Indigenous leaders fight for a resilient future… but remain divided over the same waters. As marine biodiversity and ecosystems collapse, one question rises to the surface: Who gets access to the ocean?

Guardians of the Glaciers
From the polar glaciers and Greenland’s ice sheet inward to the tropics, our planet’s glaciers and bodies of ice are disappearing – but there is still hope.

Colombian Marcela Fernández Barreneche opened a local newspaper and read that in 30 years, the glaciers would drip their last drop. Compelled by an almost paralyzing slew of emotions – frustration, sadness, and disappointment – Barreneche refused to let her lack of expertise get in the way of taking action. Transforming negative feelings into positive recourse, Marcela recognized she didn’t need expertise, she needed experts.

From this ethos and the common mission to understand glaciers comprehensively, the organisation Cumbres Blancas Colombia was born on Poleka Kasue and subsequently, Glacier Nation. Through expeditions into alpine ecosystems they are forming a coalition to share knowledge, strengthen policy, and scale solutions as they build connections with 43 glaciated countries. Glaciologists, scientists, mountaineers, photographers, spiritual elders, government officials, journalists, and ecologists each have their own perspectives.

The bodies of ice we call glaciers and ice sheets account for the majority of the world’s freshwater. In the most recent Ice Age 20,000 years ago, they covered 8% of the Earth. In a recession visible from orbit, today, only 0.5% of the Earth’s surface has ice coverage.

But there’s good news nestled within the bad news. As the glacial melt spreads, so, too does news and awareness of the ramifications and costs. As a result, people are coming together to protect the ice.

Exploring Remote Tahitian Atolls
Take a walk with tour guide Thierry through Motu Reiono, a tiny outer islet of a ring-shaped group of islands of the atoll of Tetiaroa, French Polynesia. This is what the Tahitian primary forest used to look like. Thanks to Tetiaroa Society's tireless efforts to eradicate invasive species, the native hermit crabs and cabbage trees are thriving. This is Thierry Sommer’s happy place, wrangling coconut crabs that can snap your finger off (he still has all 10) and standing in the shelter of the grandpa cabbage tree. They have so much wisdom to share.

Come for snacks, drinks, and great conversation around climate action!
