Listening across Worlds - with Samira Agnihotri
IEN Research Spotlights are community events hosted by the India Ecoacoustics Network (IEN), where we highlight works of researchers who employ acoustics to explore and understand their environments. These sessions are free and open to join for anyone with an interest in ecoacoustics and environmental research.
We invite you to the 17th IEN Research Spotlight featuring Dr. Samira Agnihotri.
Samira is an ecologist and interdisciplinary researcher whose work moves across ecology, sound, anthropology, and linguistics. She completed her MSc in Wildlife Biology and Conservation at the National Centre for Biological Sciences and her PhD at the Centre for Ecological Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science.
Much of her work is grounded in what she calls “listening ecology” — an approach that foregrounds attentiveness to diverse voices – human and more-than-human, and in doing so, aims to encourage people to listen more -- to the sounds of nature around them, and to each other.Since 2004, her research has been rooted in the eco-cultural landscape of the Biligiri Rangan Hills, where she collaborates closely with the Soliga community. She also leads the Coexistence Fellowship Programme at TDU, which strives to create an environment that enables young people to learn about conservation - from, and with each other - through local knowledge and lived experiences, bring this knowledge to the mainstream and work together to create locally-driven and equitable conservation practices that enable the continuing existence of their shared lifewords.
In this talk, Samira looks back at her career in bioacoustics. Beginning with birdsong, she takes us on a sonic journey that meanders across disciplinary boundaries, into ancient worldviews and new philosophies, ending with an invitation to let your ears lead your heart.
Join us to hear more about Samira's intriguing work with sounds, nature and communities. To secure the Zoom link, and any resources, kindly RSVP via this Luma page.
