Wet Felting: Crafting Cozy Wool Slippers
20% OFF WINTER SALE (Dec 16th-31st), CODE: WINTER2025
Wet felting is an ancient technique where hot water and agitation merge the wool fibers together. It's an art form that's slowly disappearing, but the tradition is rich. In the Scottish highlands, it was often a communal ceremony for women, who used "waulking songs" as a way to keep the rhythm as they fused the fibers together. And in South Asian cultures like Nepali, Kashmiri, and Pashto cultures, women included designs on their wool felting to convey desires for fertility and protection, as well as making felted wool as a way to survive harsh and cold mountain climates.
One of the oldest forms of fiber arts (did you know people used to use urine instead of hot water?), wet felting requires no thread or needle, no sewing machine, no fabric tape... just water and movement!
Using welt felting, in this class, you will learn how to create cozy winter slippers from 100% wool and leave with your very own pair of wool slippers to take home to dry, after which, they will keep you warm for many years to come!
We will be using the wool boot pattern from Living Felt as a starting point, but you can customize your slippers with different colors and decorations if you wish!
Due to high materials cost, volunteer course credits are not applicable to this workshop.
