Crypto’s Quantum Problem

Google new paper puts real numbers on resource estimate for breaking secp256k1 — the signature curve behind both networks. We will break down:

  • The updated attack cost

  • The paper’s three attack models — on-spend, at-rest, and on-setup

  • Why Bitcoin and Ethereum are exposed in very different ways. Bitcoin’s key issue is the mempool window during spends; Ethereum’s is more structural, spanning accounts, admin keys, staking, and KZG-based data availability.

Session Lead

Ko-Wei Tseng (IOTA Asia Ecosystem Lead) - He's been with WPRC since the beginning of time. He also happens to have a Quantum Physics PhD from NUS and helped translate Mastering Monero to Chinese.

Resources

We want to thank SuperNet (Aileen) for giving us their beautiful office again (and maybe their cat) - they are building a new layer one for portable AI memory context.

Session Format

  • 10 mins silent reading to start

  • Discussion-first, no panels

  • Bring questions (technical depth welcomed)

  • Short notes + key takeaways shared after the session

Important: Not a promotion of projects or ideas :)

Summaries

We create detailed and easy to understand summaries for each paper (summaries) and have held 70+ sessions since June 2023, covering topics from Account Abstraction, Parallel Chains, EIPs, Bitcoin Ecosystem to AIXCrypto. We are ecosystem-agnostic, not for profit and with a strong focus on projects with technical, product or social innovations.
