Janna spent two years quietly preparing for something she hadn't given herself permission to start. She built the set she films in long before she had anything to film. She made the social accounts two years before she posted on them.
This session is about that gap, between feeling a creative spark and acting on it, and what it takes to make things when nothing in your life is asking you to.
She studied English literature, then journalism, and spent years wanting to make things about books while telling herself she didn't have the time. She'll get practical about making room for that alongside a full-time job, which she still works.
She'll also talk about what her work is now: deep dives and ramblings into books, film, music and television including two she's preparing: The Egyptian Book of the Dead and Midnight in Cairo: The Divas of Egypt's Roaring 20s. Almost nobody in her niche is discussing either, which says something about how where you live shapes what you're drawn to make.
She'll close with a moderated conversation with us + Q&A.

Cohort members get all six sessions, plus the recordings to keep for the season, a small group of 5–7 you move through the twelve weeks with, optional workshops and activities, and a collaborative creative release we publish together on Metalabel in December.

We're Sama and Jacqueline, co-founders of Coqtail Hour, a creative community and experiential design studio. We spent the last few months running events across the Bay Area for multidisciplinary creatives reclaiming their hours after five, and this fall we're taking it global for a season before coming back IRL in November!
Age Restriction + Recording Disclaimer
You must be 18+ to register and attend. This session is recorded and shared with our cohort members afterward. Drop-in tickets don't include the recording.
Attendees are muted by default and cameras are optional. If you'd rather not appear, keep yours off and use the chat.
Our guest also receives a copy of their own session to use however they like, which may include sharing it publicly. If you'd rather not be in that, cameras off.
Cancellation Policy
Unfortunately, drop-in tickets for this event are non-refundable/exchangeable! But if you'd like to swap for a different guest session this season, email us any time before the session starts and we'll move you. And if you can't make it but someone else can, just send us their email.
If we need to reschedule or cancel, you'll get first choice of a new date or a full refund.
