[SEA QIA Series] Satellite-based Quantum communications with SpeQtral

​This talk will introduce the concept of quantum communications—an emerging technology that uses the principles of quantum physics to enable ultra-secure data transmission. At SpeQtral, we design and develop quantum satellites to distribute quantum encryption keys across vast distances, paving the way for a future where global communications are protected against even the most advanced cyber threats.

​The team will walk through the key milestones and activities that are crucial to ensuring our quantum satellites perform as expected and contribute valuable data to the development of space-based quantum networks. Whether you're curious about quantum tech or excited by space innovation, this session offers a unique glimpse into how SpeQtral is shaping the future of secure communications from space.

​This event is part of our “Quantum Industry in SEA” series, co-organised by SG Quantum Tech Meetup and the Southeast Asia Quantum Industry Association to increase awareness and educate about quantum technologies, facilitate exchanges and develop a connected quantum ecosystem in the region.

​Speaker

​Aitor Villar, Lead Quantum Engineer

​Aitor earned his PhD at the Centre for Quantum Technologies in 2019. His thesis, entitled “Building Entangled Photon Pair Sources for Quantum Key Distribution with Nano-Satellites”, involved the study and implementation of space-qualified, entangled photon-pair sources for quantum communications. He is now working at SpeQtral in commercializing quantum key distribution systems for quantum-safe global networks.

​Ishan Basyal, Director Programme Delivery

​As Director of Programme Delivery at SpeQtral, Ishan bridges technical execution and commercial strategy in the field of quantum-secure satellite communications. Trained as an aerospace engineer, he oversees the launch, integration, and operations of SpeQtral’s Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) satellites. Prior to joining SpeQtral, Ishan served as a Systems Engineer for SES’s flagship O3b mPOWER program, contributing to the development of next-generation high-throughput satellite systems.
