Welcome to our next Movie Screening & Discussion hosted by the EU Climate Pact Belgium and the Impact Hub in Antwerp! This time we screen GASLIT, a Greenpeace USA documentary. We thank the collaboration and presence of Greenpeace, without whose help this evening would not be possible.
About the movie
In GASLIT, Academy Award-winning actor and activist Jane Fonda embarks on a road trip through Texas oil fields and Gulf Coast communities, meeting the people who are fighting back against the oil and gas extraction boom. The boom, which has led to the United States becoming the world’s biggest liquefied “natural” gas (LNG) exporter, is also fueling a massive expansion of plastics production, as fossil fuel companies double down on petrochemicals to secure their future. GASLIT is the story of the shrimpers, cattle ranchers, former oil workers, faith communities, community organizers, self-described “reluctant activists,” and people across political and cultural spectrums who have come together in defense of the communities and coastlines they love. Join Fonda as she travels across Texas and Louisiana bearing witness to the decades-long struggle between fossil fuel profiteering and the lives of everyday people.
At this event we will live interview the American activists who collaborated on the production of this movie, including Greenpeace staff. Be there to share your thoughts and connect with fellow concerned citizens.
The event will be hosted at the high-quality cinema DIVE in Antwerp.
Speakers
First, a former public servant, Andy Gheorghiu became involved in the anti-fracking movement when an international oil and gas company requested a permission license for shale gas development in North-Hesse, Germany, where he lives. He works as a full-time freelance campaigner, consultant, and activist for climate and environmental protection. He contributed as a researcher and co-author to the Friends of the Earth reports “Fracking Frenzy” and “Fracking business (as usual).” He also works as a policy advisor for Food & Water Europe.
Secondly, we directly call with John Beard. He is a prominent advocate for environmental justice in Port Arthur, Texas. He is the founder and executive director of the Port Arthur Community Action Network (PACAN), which focuses on fighting pollution from fossil fuel industries and improving the health and well-being of local residents. Beard has a deep connection to the community, having worked in the petrochemical industry and grown up in Port Arthur, where he has witnessed the negative impacts of pollution from nearby facilities. His organization has been involved in various advocacy efforts, including partnerships with organizations like Earthjustice to raise awareness about the environmental consequences of fossil fuel production.
