Afrofuture World-build: The Future of Birthdays

​A birthday marks our arrival through a portal into this world, this reality. It is a ritual of transition and celebration. A moment to honor who we have become, the wisdom we have gathered, and the possibilities still waiting for us. But what happens when the birthday ritual itself begins to evolve?

​What might birthdays look like 50 years from now?

​Imagine a future where artificial intelligence is woven into the fabric of everyday life, where longevity technologies have transformed our relationship to aging. Where space travel has made new worlds accessible.

​Will we celebrate alongside robots and AI companions? Will our families gather in a space hotel orbiting the Earth? What happens when turning 99 no longer feels particularly old? And if aging can be slowed, altered, or even arrested, what happens to the meaning of age? To milestones? To the very idea of celebrating another year of being alive?

​The Future of Birthdays is a participatory Afrofuture world-building experience where we’ll imagine these possibilities together.

​Over three hours, we’ll bring our own birthday rituals, memories, traditions, fantasies, and desires into a collective exploration of what celebration could become.

​We’ll take the familiar rituals of today and carry them 50 years into the future. What will we keep? What will we abandon? What new rituals will we invent? And how might we celebrate life, transformation, pleasure, connection?

​Fittingly, this world-build takes place on my birthday, a day I share with my maternal grandmother and the legendary Barry White :)
