BACKGROUND: JAPAN AND NORTHERN IRELAND

Did you know that in October 2025, Sony took a majority stake in STATSports, a Northern Ireland wearables company whose trackers are used by hundreds of professional sports teams?

Or that in the same month, NTT DATA acquired Alchemy Technology Services, an insurance technology firm in Derry, and made it a global centre of excellence?

Or that Rakuten runs a global cyber security and blockchain operations team from Belfast, and Terumo BCT manufactures blood and cell therapy products in Larne?

What they found is a region of 1.9 million people, an hour's flight from London, small enough that a founder can reach anyone in a day, with:

·Queen's University Belfast ranked first in the UK for entrepreneurial impact in Octopus Ventures' 2019 and 2020 rankings, ahead of Oxford and Cambridge. Its commercialisation arm has created more than 100 technology spin-outs.

·Belfast is the UK's leading city for US R&D investment and has been a top European location for US cyber security investment for a decade (fDi Markets). CSIT at Queen's is the UK's national Innovation and Knowledge Centre for cyber security.

·The £100m Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre opened this year, giving manufacturers access to AI, robotics and digital twins alongside Queen's, Ulster University and industry partners.

EVENT OVERVIEW
7 companies selected for the Japanese market, in Tokyo for Innovation Leaders Summit, will showcase their technologies. For corporates, venture investors and start-ups, this is a chance to meet with new-to-market Northern Ireland technologies in manufacturing, cleantech and enterprise AI, and learn about Northern Ireland’s innovation ecosystem.

Attendees can then enjoy networking over Northern Irish whiskey, provided by British Embassy Tokyo.

ソニー、NTTデータ、楽天、テルモ。実はこの4社が、同じ英国の地域に投資していることをご存じでしたか？

2025年10月、ソニーは、プロスポーツ数百チームが使用するトラッカーを手がける北アイルランドのウェアラブル企業STATSportsの過半数株式を取得しました。

同月、NTTデータはデリーの保険テクノロジー企業Alchemy Technology Servicesを買収し、グローバル・センター・オブ・エクセレンスと位置づけました。

楽天はベルファストにグローバルなサイバーセキュリティ・ブロックチェーン運用チームを置き、テルモBCTはラーンで血液・細胞治療関連製品を製造しています。

その地域とは、北アイルランドです。人口約190万人、ロンドンから飛行機で約1時間。そして、創業者が一日で主要な関係者に会えるほどのコンパクトなビジネス環境があります。

では、なぜ日本を代表する企業が北アイルランドを選んでいるのでしょうか。その背景には：

·クイーンズ大学ベルファストは、Octopus Venturesの起業インパクト・ランキング（2020年）でオックスフォード、ケンブリッジを抑えて英国1位。同大学の事業化部門は100社以上のテクノロジー・スピンアウトを生み出しており、登壇する7社のうち2社も含まれます。

·ベルファストは米国企業のR&D投資先として英国1位、米国サイバーセキュリティ企業の投資先としても過去10年にわたり欧州の上位に位置しています。クイーンズ大学のCSITは、サイバーセキュリティ分野における英国のナショナル・イノベーション・ナレッジセンターです。

·今年開所した1億ポンドの先進製造イノベーションセンター（AMIC）では、クイーンズ大学、アルスター大学、産業界パートナーとともに、製造業がAI、ロボティクス、デジタルツインを活用できます。7社のうち2社は、こうした製造現場に製品を提供しています。

当日の流れ

北アイルランド政府投資庁が日本市場向けに選抜し、Innovation Leaders Summitのために来日する7社が、連続でピッチを行います。うち4社は資金調達中です。事業会社の新規事業担当者にとっては、製造、エネルギー、気候テック、エンタープライズAI分野の厳選された技術を1時間で把握できる機会。投資家にとっては、一つの会場で4件のオープンな調達ラウンドです。その後、北アイルランド産ウイスキーとジンを囲んで1時間のネットワーキング。
