🌟 Apache Iceberg - Governance and Business Continuity
Modern data platforms increasingly behave like software systems — but most organizations still lack safe workflows for changing data. Updating a table in production can easily break downstream pipelines, dashboards, or machine learning models.
In this session, we explore how Write-Audit-Publish (WAP) and Iceberg’s branching and tagging capabilities introduce Git-like workflows to the data lakehouse. Instead of writing directly to production tables, teams can validate changes, test transformations, and audit results before publishing them.
We’ll walk through the core concepts behind WAP, branches, and tags in Apache Iceberg, and explain how they enable safer experimentation, reproducibility, and controlled data releases.
To make this concrete, the session includes a live demo showing how to:
write data to a staging branch
validate and audit changes
publish the result to production
use tags to create reproducible data snapshots
If you’re interested in bringing software engineering best practices to data management, this session will show how Iceberg makes it possible.
Viktor Kessler, is Co-Founder of Vakamo and the creator of Lakekeeper, an Apache Licensed Iceberg REST Catalog. He’s a big believer in open standards like Apache Iceberg, which he sees as the backbone of today’s modern, composable Data & Analytics systems.
🌟 Durable and Maintainable Data Ingestion at Scale
Onboarding new data sources is a routine responsibility for data engineers—and a significant challenge for data teams. To make this process efficient, data platforms should provide tooling that is simple to adopt, reliable in operation, and maintainable at scale.
Arcane is an open-source data-streaming framework developed by Ecco’s Data Platform team. Written in Scala and built on ZIO—an effectful, strongly typed functional programming framework—Arcane is designed to support scalable and correct data-processing pipelines.
In this talk, we focus on two brand new components:
Arcane Push Stream and Arcane Pull Stream. Together they create a simple and reliable data integration interface for any HTTP-capable data producer.
We will explore how these systems streamline data-source onboarding through:
* Easy setup and operation
* A schema- and data-contract-first approach
* Guarantees against data loss
* Delivery feedback that allows senders to react when data has not been received or integrated
* Native integration with the Apache Iceberg REST Catalog (Lakekeeper)
The talk will share the design principles behind these systems and how they support durable, scalable, and maintainable data ingestion in a production environment.
Timon is a senior software engineer on ECCO’s Data Platform team, where he focuses on building serverless, cloud-native systems using technologies including Python, Go, Scala, Rust, Kubernetes, AWS, and Terraform. Outside of work, he enjoys building mechanical keyboards, riding gravel bikes, and playing the saxophone.
🌟 Cross-region replication for Apache Iceberg
Cross-region replication keeps a usable copy of a table in another cloud region so you can keep running if the primary region is gone. For Apache Iceberg, this is more than copying Parquet files: everything from metadata, snapshots, history, to catalog state have to move with the data. This becomes more challenging when the same Parquet files are represented by both Iceberg and Delta Lake metadata. This talk looks at table copies, and at how dual-format tables change what a replication is.
Sebastian Baunsgaard is a software engineer at Databricks working on open table formats, metadata, and data replication. He is a PMC member of Apache SystemDS and an active open-source contributor. Before joining Databricks, he completed his PhD at TU Berlin researching workload-aware compression, after studying computer science at ITU Copenhagen.
🌟 ICEBERG Catalog & v4
As the Apache Iceberg ecosystem matures, organizations are moving beyond basic table formats toward highly scalable, multi-engine lakehouse architectures. At the core of these deployments lies the Iceberg Catalog—the critical engine that governs state, transaction safety, and metadata coordination across streaming pipelines and analytical workloads.
This talk explores a real-world Iceberg Catalog customer example and why they chose to go with Apache Iceberg.
We will round up the session by looking at into the evolutionary jump from Iceberg Spec V3 to Spec V4
Andrija is a dedicated data professional passionate about bridging technical solutions with strategic business goals. As a Data Platform Architect at Snowflake, he specializes in end-to-end data platform architecture, lakehouse design, data ingestion, and transformation. Emphasizing scalability, Andrija helps customers build robust data architectures and data pipelines that enable organizations to effectively manage, structure, and extract meaningful insights from complex data assets.
