About Event

Public spaces in New York City, and especially its vast transport infrastructure, elicit strong emotions (to put it mildly) from millions of its daily users. Opinions of public infrastructure become a window into what we believe our city should feel and look like. In the face of its shortfalls, it’s easy to move between feelings of ownership or disavowal, or to swing wildly between active engagement and apathy.

On December 9th, we’re featuring three people who have dared to reimagine how we might think differently and more creatively about public spaces in the city. They want us to ask: what would it take for public spaces to be more welcoming? Why wait, when you can start changing our city’s infrastructure for the better, today? Join us as we navigate these questions and imagine how each of us might be a force for good in our public spaces.

Please RSVP.

Al Mullen started Public Transport Magazine five issues ago. A free zine exclusive to the New York City Subway where contributors including comedians, TV writers, cartoonists, and (most importantly) subway riders make comedy both about and not about the subway to read while you're on the train.

Hannah La Follette Ryan, is a New York -based photographer and educator. She started her @subwayhands project in 2015, inspired by countless hours spent in transit. Alongside her photo practice, she teaches continuing education at the International Center of Photography.

Jack Klein is the founder of New York Lab, a coalition of researchers, engineers, and advocates working toward cleaner, cooler subway stations through transparent data collection that helps us understand and address the public systems we live in.

Anew is a gathering space and discovery center for the social impact community.
