Write the Rules: Launching an Avalanche L1

A three-hour hands-on session where you launch your own Avalanche L1 and decide how it works. Part of Rlay Blockchain Week.

Full description

On most chains you write contracts. On Avalanche you can also write the rules the chain runs by.

In this session you launch your own L1 on Fuji testnet and change a few things about how it behaves. You pick the gas token and what it is called. You set the gas price to zero and send a transaction from an empty wallet to see what happens. You remove an address from the allowlist and watch the chain reject it. Then we connect two chains with ICM and pass a message between them.

None of this is complicated once you see it working. That is sort of the point. A lot of what sounds abstract about blockchains becomes obvious after you have changed one setting and watched the result on a block explorer.

Everything runs in the browser through Avalanche Builder Console, so there is nothing to install. If you want to write and deploy your own contract, bring Foundry or use Remix, but it is not required.

We work in teams of three, and we mix experience levels on purpose. Someone who has never used a wallet and someone who writes Solidity end up at the same table, which usually works better than it sounds.

We close by looking at how any of this carries into the hackathon, and which Avalanche grant programs are currently open.

What you will have done by the end

  • Launched an L1 on Fuji with your own chain ID and token

  • Changed gas, deploy permissions and token supply using precompiles

  • Sent a message between two chains over ICM

  • Explained your chain's rules to the room in two minutes

Who it is for

All three camp tracks. No prior experience needed. If you have never set up a wallet, come 15 minutes early and we will sort it out before we start.

What to bring

  • A laptop (a browser is enough)

  • Core wallet installed, if you can manage it beforehand

  • Foundry or Remix, only if you plan to write a contract

Practical

  • Duration: 3 hours

  • Location: Rlay Hub camp, Kayserkaya Dağ Evleri

  • Run by Team1 Türkiye

  • Free for all participant
