回收嘉年华 Recycling Carnival |dweller x The Mu|上海活动
Installation artist Tianyotala will use discarded waste reclaimed from an actual carnival to improvise the on-site construction of a "carnival monster," allowing the audience to witness its creation from scratch. Participants are also invited to bring their own trash to throw into the main installation—or even offer their own bodies—which the artist will embed into the artwork as material in real time.
Performance artists Yuri Chen and Jared Mimm will perform wearing installations similarly crafted from recycled materials. The artists' bodies will become an extension of these discarded objects, engaging in tireless yet aimless "Sisyphean" futile labor within this bizarre amusement park.
A mix blending party electronic music with live audio recordings from a real carnival—a little chaotic, yet completely liberating.
You aren't required to pay close attention here. Upon entry, you'll receive a complimentary drink from our private tavern, but you'll have to get hands-on first: we've prepared a bunch of fun props for you to build your own glass. You can drink, chat, and dance just like at a party, completely ignoring the performance; or you can join the creation of the monster installation, discussing your ideas and creativity with the artist on-site; alternatively, you can just slump down somewhere and let yourself be "trash" for a few hours.
In addition to all this, we also have a small "restricted zone" offering genuine, natural respite.
Tickets are 80 RMB, which serves as a temporary deposit for entry into the carnival. At the end of the event, you can reclaim your deposit based on how long you stayed (at a rate of 0.2 RMB per minute, as a return gift for idling away the time with us). The longer you stay, the further the outside world drifts away. Of course, you also have the right to "forfeit" your refund.
✉️ This is a collaborative event between The Mu and Dweller. After registering, please contact WeChat ID: Dweller2024 to confirm your spot.
We invite you to create statement pieces from household trash and come dressed in your most bizarre attire!
Tianyotala
Tianyotala is a Chinese interdisciplinary artist. Her work spans installation sculpture, jewelry design, video art, and experimental theater. She is skilled at the magical, improvisational transformation of "readymade" objects, creating a self-reflective overload of visuals within surreal imagery and narrative spaces, through which she reflects an absurdity that defies resolution.
Yuri Chen
Yuri Chen, she is a performance artist.
Her works focus on public space, long and boring time, repressed organisms, one and many, systems and bugs, the relationship between high and low, the difference between floating and swimming.
She is happy to act as a colorful stumbling block in a solidified system.
Instrumental sounds are also used as nonverbal narratives.
Often through sudden ways, awaken the deep consciousness hidden under the inertia.
Jared Mimm
Jared Mimm is an American conceptual performance artist based in Shanghai. Through his art, he hopes to let the audience break free of the endless cycle of consumption, embarking on a more thoughtful, perhaps poetic, path of awareness. Recurring themes in his work involve the body, nonverbal communication, ritual, sound, and intimacy.
Jared Mimm
I recently came to Shanghai to participate in a six-day art carnival. After the revelry faded, I looked at the discarded materials that had once carried so much laughter and so many dreams, and I felt they shouldn’t just die like this. I wanted to give these materials "a little more time"—to allow for a "delayed metabolism" before they completely turned into trash.
This is a savage intrusion upon "refined living," a translation of nothingness unfolding right in the heartland of consumerism. It is an interrogation of the boundary between "dreams" and "desire," and a reflection on the resulting heaviness of materiality.
Interestingly, after agreeing to collaborate with Jared and Yuri, I read the written statements they sent over, and they aligned perfectly with what this event seeks to express!
