Ecology on the Edge: Birding for Climate & Environmental Justice at Tijuana Estuary
Join Feminist Bird Club San Diego and the San Diego Bird Alliance for a special San Diego Climate Week birding event through the Tijuana River Estuary.
The Tijuana River Estuary is one of Southern California’s last intact coastal wetland ecosystems; it's a critical refueling stop on the Pacific Flyway for over 370 bird species. However, it also sits at the epicenter of intersectional climate and environmental justice issues, from border infrastructure fragmentation to severe sewage pollution and habitat degradation.
This event is designed for all birding levels and is absolute beginner friendly. As we spot resident and migratory birds, we’ll discuss how climate change, border policy, and water quality impact both local avian populations and surrounding human communities.
There is not a parking lot available at the trail, so we recommend carpooling and taking public transit if you're able!
Primary Bus Line: San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) Bus Route 933 or Route 934 (the Iris Transit Center Loop).
Connecting via Trolley: Take the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley south toward San Ysidro and get off at the Iris Transit Center. Transfer directly to Bus 933 or 934.
Closest Bus Stop: 3rd Street & Imperial Beach Boulevard.
What to Bring: Binoculars (loaners will be provided on a first-come basis), comfortable shoes, water, and sun protection.
Accessibility Info: The trail features a flat, 4- to 6-foot wide pathway made of compacted soil stabilized with decomposed granite and gravel.
