What’s with Ontario’s nuclear and gas obsession?
Learn about Ontario’s history and future of energy: nuclear, coal, gas, storage, water, wind and solar.
Did you know that Ontario's nuclear build out essentially bankrupted the province in the 90’s? And that our current gov’t is doing it again with a doubling of the fleet? Our provincial deficit has ballooned under Ford’s leadership, half of which ($6.9 B and growing) is to cover high-cost nuclear builds. And OPG has applied for another 72% increase in the price it receives for nuclear power. To build out these reactors, they’ve quintupled (and rising) the amount of dirty gas they’re burning, most of which is fracked and imported from the US.
Meanwhile, the rest of the world is stampeding towards renewables: 92% of new electricity supply added around the world in 2024 was renewable. And with the Iran conflict, the renewables revolution is unstoppable.
Could Ontario meet our growing electricity needs with 100% renewable, low-cost power? What about jobs? Storage? Transmission?
