About the Films:
Oceanic Global Short Film Festival 2025 Select Winning Films
A Dragon's Story (dir. Dean Spraakman)- An intimate portrait takes the viewer on a journey showcasing the life and reproduction cycle of the Leafy Sea Dragon.
The Cosmos Beneath (dir. Lucas Lengagne)- A contemplative short film that draws a poetic parallel between the vastness of the ocean and the cosmos, capturing the shared sense of wonder, mystery, and humility they inspire. Through mesmerizing imagery, the film pays tribute to the deep connection between looking up at the stars and diving beneath the waves, revealing nature’s ancient and awe-inspiring majesty.
Peixinho (dir. Kaushiik Subramaniam)- An inspiring story of resilience and transformation in a remote Mozambican village, where one man’s mission to teach children to swim and promote ocean safety sparks hope for the community. As he challenges outdated fishing practices and advocates for sustainable solutions, he bridges generations, redefining what it means to live in harmony with the sea.
Seaweed Stories (dir. Jake Sumner)- Narrated by Forest Whitaker, directed by Jake Sumner and presented by Lonely Whale in association with Re:wild, Seaweed Stories is a vibrant, global look at the wonders of seaweed, and some of the extraordinary stories and characters whose lives have been entangled by this often overlooked marine organism which may hold answers to some of humanity’s biggest challenges. Seaweed Stories includes insights from a Silicon Valley startup creating plastic alternatives from macroalgae, to the Indigenous Shinnecock Kelp Farmers using seaweed to prove their sovereign right to coastal land, and a scientist in South Korea supporting seaweeds’ sexual reproduction to create new species that can withstand the effects of a changing climate #beatplasticpollution
