Stanford OpenLab is hosting a seminar with Travis Oliphant, creator of NumPy and SciPy and co-founder of Anaconda, NumFOCUS, and OpenTeams, for a conversation on the open-source foundations of modern AI.
Travis will share his perspective on how open-source tools, scientific computing frameworks, and developer communities have shaped the evolution of data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. The conversation will also explore recent developments across the open-source AI and data science ecosystems and the role these communities will play in the future of AI.
This OpenLab seminar is designed for Stanford students, researchers, founders, and builders interested in AI, open-source software, scientific computing, and technology entrepreneurship.
About Travis Oliphant
Dr. Travis Oliphant is a leading figure in the Python, scientific computing, and AI communities. He launched the SciPy project in 1999 while pursuing his PhD at the Mayo Clinic and created NumPy in 2005 while serving as a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Brigham Young University. These foundational libraries have become indispensable across scientific research and industry, helping establish Python as one of the world’s most widely used programming languages and a core foundation of modern AI.
Travis is also a prolific entrepreneur. In 2012, he co-founded Anaconda, which enables secure AI, machine learning, and data-centric workflows for millions of users. In 2018, he launched Quansight, bringing together an open-source research lab, a consulting practice, and a venture fund to support emerging technologies and companies built on open-source software.
He later founded OpenTeams and Open Technology Incubator to help open-source innovations achieve successful commercialization. Through these organizations and related investment initiatives, he has supported and invested in more than 25 companies.
Travis continues to advise the organizations he founded while mentoring emerging leaders across the open-source and AI ecosystems. He also advises several AI and data infrastructure companies, including Zyphra, Bodo, Saturn Cloud, and OpenBB.
Outside of his professional work, Travis enjoys exploring challenging problems in mathematics, computing, and social organization, as well as spending time with his family.
