Kathan Zerzan - Artist Talk
Join us on the closing day of 'More Than Yellow' for a discussion with the artist, Kathan Zerzan.
Kathan Zerzan is the first woman to hold a solo show in this gallery, and her path to the easel is anything but conventional. As an undergraduate, she landed on an FBI watch list for leading campus protests at the University of Oregon in 1970, activism that carried through a twenty-year career as a registered nurse and one of the country's first nurse practitioners. Even her student work at Pacific Northwest College of Art made headlines, when The Oregonian covered a class project staged by six art students protesting homelessness. Her paintings work through that same instinct toward resistance and reckoning, treating each canvas as a live conversation: the first mark unsettles everything, and the work that follows has its own beginning, middle, and end. In a moment thick with disinformation and manufactured images, Zerzan's response is simple and defiant, to pick up a brush and say "I am here."
