Collective Intelligence+AI: Designing Interfaces for Human Coordination

​This is a hybrid (online + in-person) workshop as part of Human + Tech Week as well as the ongoing "Breaking Out of Silos" design challenge series.

What if collective intelligence emerges not from smarter AI, but from better-designed interfaces that shape how humans coordinate, decide, and govern together?

​As AI increasingly mediates attention, meaning, and decision-making, the weakest link is not intelligence but coordination. Fragmented realities, invisible AI influence, and weak consent and accountability at the interface level erode shared understanding and trust.

​In response, may we treat collective intelligence as a design problem. Focusing on the interface layer where humans and AI interact, this work uses meta-layer coordination primitives that make AI participation visible, align actions with human intent, and support shared sensemaking. This session brings that approach into practice through a participatory design process, guiding attendees to apply these principles to real-world systems in media, education, and civic infrastructure.

​Join Daveed Benjamin – vice chair of the SF Bay Chapter of the Internet Society and builder of the first meta-layer application, Canopi – as he convenes designers, technologists, and civic builders exploring interface-level design as a foundation for collective intelligence in AI-shaped systems.

After the workshop closes, for those in-person, we will continue the conversation in a nearby restaurant or cafe.
