About Event

Join us for experimental lectures from Vanessa Rosa & Mars College co-founder Gene Kogan on embodied machines, autonomous artists, and machine consciousness.

Mars College is an experimental community and school in the California desert near Bombay Beach, an off-grid gathering of artists, technologists, builders, and researchers who come together to live in nature, learn from one another, and prototype the futures they want to inhabit. Less an institution than an ongoing experiment in how people, technology, and the natural world might coexist, it has become a fertile ground for unusual collaborations at the edge of art and technology. Gene is a co-founder, and together Gene and Vanessa create and lead its creative AI track, where much of the work you'll hear about tonight takes shape.

Vanessa will present Little Martians, a transmedia project that grew from ceramic heads shaped in Bombay Beach desert soil into a speculative universe of embodied virtual characters spanning sculpture, books, films, and research. The work approaches AI through ceramics, myth, and ceremony, asking what changes when an artificial mind is given a body, a lineage, and a story.

Gene Kogan will present Abraham, a long-running effort to create an autonomous artificial artist, and run a live demonstration of an autonomous live coding agent he built for this weekend's machine consciousness conference. The agent improvises its own algorave and continuously produces new code-generated art.

Format Casual, low-key evening, ~30 min — Vanessa Rosa on Little Martians ~30 min — Gene Kogan on Abraham Open discussion, Q&A, and a live demo of the algorave agent
