Rooting for Rooftops - Green Thumbs UP
Join us at Toronto’s newest rooftop urban farm! Located in Regent Park, Green Thumbs UP is established on just 5 inches soil on an innovated, extensive green roof. Thanks to a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, we were able to install a fence around the perimeter and can now allow guests and volunteers to experience it. Come learn about the future of Green Thumbs UP, the history of urban agriculture in Regent Park, and how we are building community through food and land access in the heart of downtown Toronto.
During this tour, we will plant seeds that will feed the city and learn more about food sovereignty in the process. We will learn about the importance of green infrastructure in cities and how our small, everyday acts can fight climate change.
About the Host: Green Thumbs Growing Kids has over 25 years of experience connecting children and youth to the natural world through programming in their school gardens. We are a downtown Toronto-based non-profit with deep partnerships with local schools and community agencies in Regent Park, St. James Town and nearby. We focus on creating innovative, hands-on garden programs that integrate environmental education, food literacy, and nature connection. In partnering with schools and community agencies, we promote urban agriculture, climate change solutions, healthy soil, indigenous teachings, and support both physical and mental well-being. Food gardening provides a window into human impacts on ecosystems, and our approach to environmental education emphasizes experiential learning. Our gardens are living classrooms where learning comes to life!
